Snorkeling

While the North Shore of Oahu is more famous for its world-class surfing, there are also some excellent snorkeling spots to explore. Remember to always practice responsible snorkeling by respecting the marine environment, not touching or damaging the coral reefs, and never feeding or harassing any marine life. Consider wearing reef-safe sunscreen to protect the fragile ecosystem. Additionally, check the local weather and surf conditions before snorkeling, even checking local snorkel guides.  Note: Fishing is not allowed anywhere.

Snorkel Spots

1. Shark’s Cove: Located in Pupukea, Shark’s Cove is a popular snorkeling destination known for its clear waters and vibrant marine life. It offers a unique lava rock formation that creates a natural cove, providing a sheltered area for snorkeling. The cove is home to a variety of fish, sea turtles, and other marine creatures. Remember to check the ocean conditions and avoid snorkeling during periods of high surf.  Additional activities: Cave diving and scuba dive.

2. Three Tables: Adjacent to Shark’s Cove, Three Tables is another fantastic snorkeling spot on the North Shore. It offers a series of rocky formations with shallow pools, making it an ideal location for snorkelers to explore. You can encounter a diverse range of marine life, including colorful fish and eels. Additional activities: Tide pools and sunbathes.

3. Laniakea beach: Also known as Turtle Beach is famous for its regular visits by Hawaiian green sea turtles. While it’s primarily a beach for sunbathing, you may also have the opportunity to snorkel alongside these magnificent creatures in the shallow waters. Please remember to maintain a respectful distance and never touch or disturb any marine life.

4. Kuilima cove: is a protected bay that provides calm waters for snorkeling. It offers a sandy beach and a reef with an abundance of marine life. The easy access and gentle conditions make it a suitable spot for beginners and families.

5. Waimea Bay: Although more famous for its big waves, Waimea Bay can offer decent snorkeling conditions during the summer months when the water is calmer. The rocky areas around the bay attract various fish species, making it a decent spot to explore underwater. Keep in mind that snorkeling at Waimea Bay is highly dependent on weather and ocean conditions. Additional activities: Jump rock and river surfing.
